Agra Travel Guide

Introduction

Agra exists almost entirely because of one building. The Taj Mahal is one of the world’s most recognized structures and it justifies every superlative — extraordinary in scale, perfect in proportion, and genuinely moving in a way that photographs do not capture.

But Agra also has Agra Fort (one of India’s finest Mughal fortresses) and Fatehpur Sikri (a perfectly preserved abandoned Mughal capital 40km away) — making it a rewarding 1–2 night stay.

The Taj Mahal

Built 1632–1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. 20,000 workers over 22 years. 28 types of precious and semi-precious stones inlaid in the white Makrana marble. The minarets are built slightly tilted outward so they would fall away from the main structure in an earthquake.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise: The most popular time — the marble turns pink as the sun rises. The light is extraordinary. The reflecting pool catches the silhouette perfectly.

Full moon nights: On the five nights around each full moon, the Taj is open for night viewing (8:30pm–12:30am). Limited tickets. Book weeks ahead.

Avoid: Midday heat and haze, Friday (the mosque inside is active for prayers — limited access).

Practical Details

Entry: ₹1,100 for foreigners (including archaeological museum). The entry fee jumps significantly — buy at the ticket office, not from touts.

Gates: Three entrances (East, West, South). East gate tends to have shorter queues.

Photography: No tripods allowed. Photography of the building exterior unlimited. No photography inside the main mausoleum chamber.

Restricted items: No food, large bags, or tripods. Lockers available.

Agra Fort

800m from the Taj Mahal. The red sandstone fort where the Mughal emperors actually lived (unlike the ceremonial Taj). Jahangir’s Palace, the Sheesh Mahal (glass palace), and the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son are all impressive.

Entry: ₹600 for foreigners. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

Fatehpur Sikri

40km from Agra. Emperor Akbar built this entire red sandstone city in 1571 — then abandoned it 15 years later, allegedly due to water shortage.

The Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate) is one of the largest gateways in the world. The palace and mosque complex is extraordinarily well preserved.

Entry: ₹610 for foreigners. Best reached by taxi from Agra (1 hour). Allow 2 hours.

Getting to Agra

From Delhi: Gatimaan Express (1h40m, fastest), Shatabdi Express (2h), various other trains (2.5–3h). Book at IRCTC.co.in.

By road: 3–4 hours from Delhi. Yamuna Expressway is good condition.
