Visa-free for most — but read the conditions
The Philippines offers visa-free entry to citizens of most countries for 30 days on arrival. Extensions are straightforward if you want to stay longer. Here is what you need to know.
Visa-free entry
Citizens of most Western countries, Japan, South Korea, most ASEAN nations, and many others enter visa-free for 30 days. You need: valid passport (6+ months validity), onward or return ticket (airlines may check at check-in), proof of accommodation for at least the first night. No visa application, no fee, just arrive and get stamped.
Extension
Extend at any Bureau of Immigration office (major cities and tourist areas). First extension: 29 days, PHP 3,130 total. Extensions can be repeated — maximum stay on a tourist visa is typically 36 months in total, though extensions become more complex after the first few months. The standard tourist stay of 30-59 days is straightforward to extend once.
Nationalities requiring a visa
A limited number of nationalities require a visa in advance — apply at the Philippine embassy in your home country. Most Commonwealth countries and EU member states are visa-free. Check the Bureau of Immigration website (immigration.gov.ph) for current requirements for your nationality.
Arrival practicalities
Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport has been upgraded but still has lengthy immigration queues for international arrivals. Allow 1-2 hours from landing to exiting the terminal. Cebu Mactan Airport is more efficient. Book airport transfers through Welcome Pickups to avoid overcharging on arrival.
