The insider knowledge most travel blogs skip
Most Maldives travel content focuses on luxury resorts. Here are the tips for doing it affordably.
Stay on local islands
This is the single biggest cost-saving decision. Guesthouses on inhabited islands (Maafushi, Dhigurah, Guraidhoo, Thulusdhoo) give you the Maldivian ocean experience at 10-20% of resort island prices. Many have excellent house reefs and organised snorkeling and diving. Book direct with guesthouses rather than through platforms to get slightly better rates.
Travel in shoulder season
Peak season (December-April) commands the highest prices. May and November shoulder months offer the same good weather with 20-30% lower rates. June to October is wet season — prices drop significantly but some days have rough seas and reduced visibility. May is often the sweet spot — end of dry season, prices starting to drop.
Book early for resorts, last-minute for local islands
Resort islands book up months in advance and rarely discount. Local island guesthouses often have availability and are more flexible on rates for longer stays. A week on a local island with direct booking can come in $100-200 cheaper than the same week booked through an aggregator.
Island-hop cheaply
The public ferry system is underused by tourists. From Malé, ferries go to Maafushi (45 min, $5), Dhigurah (several hours), and other local islands. Combine public ferries with occasional speedboats to see multiple islands without paying resort transfer prices.
