Laos Visa: Visa on Arrival or e-Visa Options

Simple entry for most nationalities

Laos offers visa on arrival to citizens of most countries at major entry points. The e-visa option is available for additional convenience. Here is how it works.

Visa on arrival

Available at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang International Airport, and major land border crossings including Friendship Bridge crossings with Thailand. Cost: $30-42 USD depending on nationality (most Western nationals pay $30-35). Valid for 30 days. Requires: passport photo, arrival/departure card, sufficient USD or equivalent. Processing takes 5-15 minutes.

e-Visa

Apply at laoevisa.gov.la before travel. Cost: $35-50 USD. Processing: 3 working days. Avoids the physical queue at the border — useful for busy crossings. Not available for all nationalities but covers most Western passport holders.

Visa-free countries

ASEAN member countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc.) enter visa-free for varying periods. Some other nationalities have bilateral agreements. Check current requirements as they can change.

Extension

Extend at the Laos Immigration Department in Vientiane for $2/day. Up to 30 additional days available. Simple process — bring passport and cash.

The slow boat entry point

If entering Laos from Thailand via the Huay Xai-Chiang Khong Friendship Bridge (for the slow boat to Luang Prabang), visa on arrival is available at the Laos immigration post. This is a well-practiced crossing for travelers — the process is smooth and well-organized.
