Japan is still largely cash-based. Never leave your accommodation without ¥5,000–10,000.

7-Bank ATMs (7-Eleven): Accept virtually all foreign cards. English interface. Fee: ¥110–220/withdrawal. Found in every 7-Eleven.
Japan Post Bank ATMs: Second most reliable.
Avoid Japanese bank ATMs — many don’t accept foreign cards.
How Much to Bring
- Budget traveler: ¥3,000–5,000/day
- Mid-range: ¥8,000–15,000/day
- Withdraw ¥30,000–50,000 on airport arrival
Cards
Visa/Mastercard accepted at hotels, convenience stores, department stores, larger restaurants. Bring two cards from different networks.
